Vaginoplasty/Vaginal Rejuvenation/Female Sexual Enhancement

Following a vaginal delivery chances can occur to the vaginal vault that can be uncomfortable and also affect sexual satisfaction. Besides hormonal and menopausal changes causing decreased libido, mechanical changes can occur to the vaginal canal and tissue quality.

A Gaping Introitus or the vaginal opening can become lax with muscles, nerves and connective tissue have stretched and consequently, affected the sensation of intercourse. Commonly, prolapse or herniation of an organ within the vaginal vault can be uncomfortable and painful whether from direct irritation to the inner (now outer) vaginal tissue or by pelvic or lower back pain from a chronic pulling sensation of the lower vaginal organs. Occasionally, discomfort may come from enlarged labia minora and redundant tissue as well. Although Pelvic Floor Therapy may help to a limited degree, surgical interventions, some minimal can allievate the decreased sensation during intercourse, pain relating to prolapse or stretching of the vaginal tissues. Vaginoplasty also called perrineoplasty/perineourrhaphy along with repairs of cystoceles (anterior vagina/bladder falling), rectoceles (posterior vagina/rectum bulging) and enteroceles (bowel herniation at apex/top of vagina) in addition to a limited labiaplasty if necessary can successfully improve these changes.

By removing the excess tissue/lining of the vagina, and bringing together and tightening the muscles in a more natural manner, improved sensation can be noticed. For instance, during vaginal delivery the tissue/vaginal skin, musculature, nerves, and fasica are stretched and depending on the elasticity characteristics of the individuals’ pelvis the vaginal may or may not return to its original size. Many women and their partners notice a change in vaginal sensation during intercourse if the diameter of the vaginal vault enlarges. As kegels exercises alone may not be helpful, if necessary, reconstructive surgery improvements can be realized with a vaginoplasty, prolapse repair, and occasionally a labiaplasty if bothersome.

Sexual wellbeing is an important part of life. Whether hormonal changes causing decreased libido or mechanical vaginal changes have occurred, the importance is to try to improve one’s quality of life, happy and well balanced. Many women complain of decreased sensation during intercourse, feeling “loose,” abnormal “noises” and other less enjoyable and embarrassing things. Having a minimally invasive technique to relieve or improve these symptoms can be very worthwhile. Of note, many of these surgical procedures are same day and covered by insurance as well.
